Paved Paradise Book Discussion 11/29 at Trinity

Parking can be a nightmare. Whether you're late for an event downtown and circling to find a parking spot or biking around said drivers and having to keep an eye out, no one enjoys the stress of parking. Grabar writes, "Parking-driven psychosis is a regular feature of American life," and we nod our heads in anxiety-filled agreement.

Americans, in particular, expect parking to always be "convenient, available and free," much like the ingrained idea of "free" shipping. But as we know, shipping is never actually free. And surface parking—whether paved paradise or concrete wastelands?—isn't either.

As Joni Mitchell writes in Big Yellow Taxi, “They paved paradise / put up a parking lot”—is this what we want for greater NKY?

What's the systemic cost of "perfect" parking? What does it tell us about our world, about our cities? Join us on November 29th as we gather to discuss Paved Paradise.
