Stop ODOT from Degrading the Ohio River

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking approval to degrade water quality in the Ohio River for their Brent Spence Bridge Corridor expansion project. If approved, this project would add a second bridge with up to 10 lanes of car traffic between Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio.

The environmental impact would be severe. ODOT's plans include destroying over 1,500 feet of streams and more than 4 acres of wetlands in Northern Kentucky. They also intend to build a causeway directly in the Ohio River that would remain for at least 6 years. These changes would release harmful contaminants during construction and increase long-term pollution from road runoff.

The Ohio EPA is currently considering ODOT's application to allow this water quality degradation. However, they are using flawed arguments that prioritize highway expansion over environmental protection and community wellbeing.

The Ohio River provides drinking water to millions and supports crucial ecosystems. Communities along the river deserve the opportunity to protect this vital resource. If the Ohio EPA approves this application, it will sacrifice water quality for highway expansion without considering stricter environmental protections or alternative solutions.

The EPA must hear from you. They are accepting public comments through February 5, 2025, and will hold a virtual public hearing on January 29th from 4-5 PM EST. Take action now to tell the Ohio EPA to either deny this certification or require much stronger environmental safeguards.
